Eight

“Congratulations, Ms. Julia! You look beautiful,” Abi gushed as she hugged Julia in the reception line. She didn’t have time to say anything else, as the line of well-wishers snaked outside the ballroom. She shook hands with Tyler and felt Grant’s hand on her back to guide her to a table.

“Looks like the whole team is here,” she mused as she sat down. Several players walked by and fist bumped Grant with a “Hey, Coach.” A few stopped and looked at her, then back at Grant, and walked away smiling. She wondered what they thought of seeing their coach with a pregnant date.

“The team wouldn’t miss it. They respect Tyler, and since Julia is Jason’s mother, it makes the occasion a real team event.” He collected a few pats on the back and greetings from other guests. He waved to a man walking by and then smiled at her.

She smiled back. “You’re like a celebrity, with all the people greeting you.” The attention felt uncomfortable, especially the looks she got from the adults. They weren’t the same as the grinning high school students. Instead, they were judgmental.

“It’s part of the job. Everyone wants to be your friend when you win a championship. Then if you lose, they either ignore you or tell you what you’re doing wrong.” Grant shook his head and shrugged. “You might want to get used to it,” he added.

“Why would I get used to it?”

“Because I want to date you exclusively.”

She stared at him for a moment, then recovered herself. “Very funny!” Laughter seemed to be the best response.

Grant’s brow wrinkled. “Abigail Jones, do you think I’m joking?”

“You can’t be serious, Grant. I’m a terrible dating prospect.”

“I’ll decide that for myself. May I take you to dinner next Saturday night?” He looked so handsome, with his deep brown eyes staring into hers. He laid his hand over hers.

She was speechless. “I’d like that. Thank you.”

With a light squeeze of her hand, he nodded and looked up to where the reception line was breaking up. “Looks like they want to get things started.”

His prediction was correct. A microphone suddenly clicked on over the sound system. The room’s attention swung to the noise, where Tom Martin stood as the emcee.

“Will y’all join me in welcoming Mr. and Mrs. Tyler Blalock to the dance floor?” he boomed, and the guests cheered as the couple moved to the dance floor. The whoops of merriment from the team made Tyler shake his head, and Julia threw her head back in laughter. If anyone understood the unusual behavior of teenage athletes, it was the newlyweds.

Tyler took Julia’s hand as the music began. The couple began their first dance to applause and shouts of approval.

“These boys are being rowdier than they were in the locker room after they won State,” Tyler whispered in Julia’s ear.

She chuckled. “They’re having fun. And so am I, Coach.”

“I am, too, Mrs. Coach,” and with a kiss they danced until the music started to fade. Tyler twirled her around to applause from the crowd.
